Devoted to providing competent clinical and spiritual care

Our work is grounded in our faith in Jesus Christ and the story of redemption found in Scripture. Our Christian worldview informs what it means to be human, how people change, and what thriving wholeness looks like. We are also trained to provide clinically effective care, in which we utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques in order to treat the whole person: thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and spirituality.

We Are committed to serving you regardless of your faith background

A Christian faith is by no means necessary to come see us. We seek to honor where you are and work with you towards your goals.

Our Practice

We're brothers who both happen to be therapists and we are thrilled to be working together.  This practice is the result of many years of dreaming and long conversations together about our passions and desire to help people in meaningful ways.  We provide a unique blend of theological and psychological knowledge and we are passionate about bringing those two areas together in practical ways in order to help facilitate transformative change in people’s lives. After receiving our education, training, and experience in other corners of the country, we're back where we started, in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Please spend a bit of time looking around this website to get a feel for who we are, what we value, and how you can get in touch with us to get the counseling process started.  Thanks for being here and we are excited to meet you!

Caring for individuals, couples, and families

Couples Counseling

  • Are you feeling tension, disconnect, or disappointment in your marriage? Maybe your marriage is pretty good, but you long to strengthen your bond and grow even closer to the one you love. Together we can work to heal and restore joy to your marriage that has been damaged by neglect, unhealthy conflict, infidelity, loss, or any other issue that is hurting your relationship.

    • Feeling strain and lack of engagement?

    • Going through the motions, but longing for more from your marriage?

    • Wrestling with despair and considering a separation?

    • Struggling with forgiveness and rebuilding trust from past betrayals or unfaithfulness?

    • Considering pre-marital counseling to start your relationship on solid ground?

Anger Issues

  • Damaging expressions of anger can take many shapes and sizes. Whether you are aggressive in your tone or action, you bottle up and suppress your anger, or you engage in passive aggressive ways of relating, it is probably having a negative impact on your relationships. We often don't know what to do with our very real feelings of anger. In this confusion we hurt others and ourselves, but we are also left feeling misunderstood, isolated, and self-protective. I seek to help you understand the root of your anger in a way that promotes emotional resilience, so that you can express your anger in a healthy way that fosters deeper connection with family, friends, and coworkers.

Sexual Struggles

  • Sex is a wonderful gift from God in the context of relational intimacy, but we often use it to fulfill our needs in unhealthy ways. Sex can be used in an attempt to escape, avoid, numb, and provide a sense of validation. I work with individuals to help them understand their internal world of thoughts and feelings, so that they can discover how they have been using sex in their lives. You do not need to hide anymore, and you don't need to wrestle with these issues alone and in shame. Real help and community is available to you.

    • Wrestling with guilt, shame, or self-contempt?

    • Do you feel stuck in habitual sexual behaviors?

    • Pornography?

    • Questions of orientation and identity?

    • Do you long to be known, accepted, and desired by another?

If you have any questions or are looking for counseling about another issue, please reach out and I’d be happy to help any way I can.

Tim Van Rheenen, Christian Therapist in Doylestown, PA

I received my B.A. in Psychology from Roanoke College and my M.A. in Counseling from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the states of Washington and Pennsylvania. I've pursued advanced training in working with sexual issues and am certified as a Sexual Recovery Therapist (SRT) through the American Association of Sex Addiction Therapy. I also have advanced training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) which is an experiential, client centered approach rooted in attachment theory. It is helpful for working through relational issues, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Change happens in relationship, so I work with the counseling relationship as it unfolds in the moment. I strive to listen well and to foster an environment where we can be honest with one another, and I want to empower you to try new ways of interacting that will help you unravel your current beliefs and expectations that are holding you back. I am in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance Plans.

After spending time in the Baltimore area, then Washington state, it is good to be back home in the greater Philadelphia area. I love getting into the woods, playing tennis, reading everything I can get my hands on, spending time with my wife and 2 young children, and watching the Eagles and Sixers, as painful as it often is. I look forward to meeting you!

Andrew Van Rheenen, Christian Therapist in Doylestown, PA

Life is often hard and painful. It can leave us feeling confused, lonely, and without hope. I am passionate about entering into the brokenness we all experience in this world and helping people healthily express their emotions, learn more about themselves, and grow into the people God created them to be. My areas of focus are sexual struggles, issues with anger, emotion regulation, anxiety, depression, and couples counseling, but I would be happy to walk along side of you and help you grow no matter what your story is. I know you might feel stuck and hopeless, but real change is possible. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Pennsylvania and I have training in Internal Family Systems and Emotion Focused Therapy.

I was born and raised in Bucks County, PA before I headed off to Gordon College on the north shore of Boston, where I received my B.S. in Kinesiology. From there I began working with a ministry that serves the remote areas of America in the National Parks. I was stationed in Death Valley National Park. I then attended Covenant Theological Seminary, where I received my Masters of Divinity and my Masters in Counseling degrees. I lived in St. Louis, MO for 5 years and during my time there I gained valuable experience working with youth, young adults, and counseling all ages in the private practice setting. I started Van Rheenen Counseling in 2018 and have loved getting to be a part of people’s healing and growth ever since.

I am delighted to be back in the greater Philadelphia area along with my wife Allison and our three children. When I'm not counseling, I like to spend my time hiking, watching movies, playing tennis or basketball, and hanging out with friends and family. I love coffee, the 76ers, and good music.

What payments do you accept?

You can pay with cash, checks, or card. We do not take insurance.

What is your Cancelation Policy?

Life happens and things come up unexpectedly sometimes. We ask that you give at least 24 hrs notice for non-emergency cancellations. Any cancellations within 24 hrs for non-emergencies or missed appointments will be charged for the missed session.

Do I have to be a Christian to come see you?

No! We are Christians and our faith is very important to us, but we would never force our beliefs or convictions on you. If you want to talk about your faith and how that impacts your life, we would be honored to explore that with you.

Where are you located?

Our offices are located at 150 E State St, Doylestown, PA right down the street from the County Theatre and other downtown attractions. There is a parking lot behind our building for our clients, so you don’t have to worry about street parking.

How long are Counseling sessions?

Typically, counseling sessions are 50 minutes long, but we can tailor our sessions to meet your needs.

How long should I expect to be in counseling?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a cookie cutter answer to this. It partly depends on what your goals are and where you are at in your journey. We have found that lasting change and growth cannot be rushed and often takes longer than we want it to. We also understand that not everyone has the resources to stay in counseling for years on end. We try our best to work towards your goals within the time frame that works for you. We would encourage you to try to plan for at least a few months of meeting with us if at all possible.
